The biological basis of smoltification in Atlantic salmon

نویسندگان

چکیده

Chile is the second-largest producer of Atlantic salmon in world, and Chilean production accounts for 27% world’s production. One important step productive cycle freshwater smoltification process that prepares fish marine life stage. This review describes biological basis salmon, with particular attention on branchial osmoregulatory adaptations. We also discuss some infectious diseases problems (two main causes losses aquaculture) could be related from a physiological point view.

Environmental endocrinology of salmon smoltification.

Smolting is a hormone-driven developmental process that is adaptive for downstream migration and ocean survival and growth in anadromous salmonids. Smolting includes increased salinity tolerance, increased metabolism, downstream migratory and schooling behavior, silvering and darkened fin margins, and olfactory imprinting. These changes are promoted by growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor...

Development of intestinal ion-transporting mechanisms during smoltification and seawater acclimation in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar.

This study investigated the expression of ion transporters involved in intestinal fluid absorption and presents evidence for developmental changes in abundance and tissue distribution of these transporters during smoltification and seawater (SW) acclimation of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. Emphasis was placed on Na(+) , K(+) -ATPase (NKA) and Na(+) , K(+) , Cl(-) co-transporter (NKCC) isoforms, ...

Aquaporin expression dynamics in osmoregulatory tissues of Atlantic salmon during smoltification and seawater acclimation.

Osmotic balance in fish is maintained through the coordinated regulation of water and ion transport performed by epithelia in intestine, kidney and gill. In the current study, six aquaporin (AQP) isoforms found in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were classified and their tissue specificity and mRNA expression in response to a hyperosmotic challenge and during smoltification were examined. While A...

Branchial expression patterns of claudin isoforms in Atlantic salmon during seawater acclimation and smoltification.

In euryhaline teleosts, permeability changes in gill epithelia are essential during acclimation to changed salinity. This study examined expression patterns of branchial tight junction proteins called claudins, which are important determinants of ion selectivity and general permeability in epithelia. We identified Atlantic salmon genes belonging to the claudin family by screening expressed sequ...
